I had explored this approach also. A few concerns:
1. The items come in width varying from 50 mm to 400 mm, with decimal places also. So do you still recommend creating as many item masters? Is it not possible to only create item master for the main item + thickness combination, and store the width at batch level?
2. If they want to know the overall stock for "PACK1" of a given thickness but of any width, what is the approach? They should know the qty as well the cost of "PACK1" of a given thickness and any width.
3. Creating 1 Production order for 1 Roll is practically impossible, as they sell close to 50,000 rolls in a year. The Sales Orders may limited to approx 1000 in a year, but the no. of rolls sold in those 1000 orders will be close to 50,000 rolls.
4. For your information, Bill Of Material will only be for namesake, as BoM can not be known in advance.
Can you also explore any solution based on only Item Masters for main item type and thickness, and width and other dimensions at Batch Level?
